Well, that is indeed one interesting take on the Detroit Red Wings famous winged wheel. It may, however, be some sort of weird red-and-white Easter Bunny. Or maybe it’s a pair of scissors of some sort. I really can’t say. Of course, he also gets the old 1980s airbrushed helmet too, which is never a good look.

The weird thing (OK, one of MANY weird things about this card) is that Ken actually played with Minnesota earlier that season before moving on to Detroit, who then traded him back to Minnesota, yet he is not wearing anything resembling a Minnesota uniform on this card. So, try to figure this one out. Either this picture was taken when he was in Minnesota, and they airbrushed this lovely Detroit uniform on him and added the “Now with Minnesota” tag, which would have been completely unnecessary had they just kept the North Stars uniform in the photo. Either that or this photo was taken when he was with Chicago (TWO YEARS EARLIER, I might add), and O-Pee-Chee airbrushed the Detroit uniform for some reason and then added the “Now with Minnesota” tag. I really don’t get it. I’d like to say there was a method to O-Pee-Chee’s madness, but that would just make me a liar, and I’ve always prided myself on being a straight and honest person.

Poor Ken Solheim… this atrocity is actually his rookie card. In fact, this is his only NHL card. I think I have a good interview subject for Ken Reid’s Hockey Card Stories 3 (1 and 2 are both great reads, I might add).
