In honour of the Carolina Hurricanes’ awesome plan to bring back “the Whale” in 3rd jersey form, we are proud to bring you a modern-day coaching legend as a member of said “Whale”. Funny thing though… I don’t remember the Hartford Whalers jersey ever looking like this. Poor Pucky the Whale on Joel Quenneville’s shoulders is looking like he’s gone belly-up, but at least Mr. Quenneville is sporting the classic 1980s cartoon helmet. That thing would have fit right in in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-NHL crossover episode. What an opportunity missed!

Ah, I miss those old Whalers jerseys. The real ones, I mean. That was some good stuff right there: the way the negative space inside the “W” in the logo created an “H”. And old Pucky there was great too. Most teams completely neglected sewing on shoulder patches in those days.

This past week, Joel Quenneville unfortunately lost his coaching job with the Blackhawks, but I wouldn’t feel too bad for the guy if I were you. The dude’s had nothing but success in his coaching career, has so many Stanley Cup rings decorating his fingers his hands probably drag against the ground like a caveman, and he has earned top dollar as one of the premier bench bosses in recent memory. I wouldn’t be surprised if signed a brand new lucrative contract before the end of the month.
