At first glance, this card might seem pretty normal. There’s nothing particularly weird about Len Lunde. He’s not mugging for the camera or doing something douchy like sitting in a shopping cart letting some dude cut his hair (remember Brad Isbister?). I am a bit worried about the bright sun shining in that pinkish-purple sky, but hey, if he wants to hang around in a nuclear waste land à la Damnation Alley, that’s his prerogative. Oh, and you may have noticed the backwards Canucks logo on Len’s chest.

This card, unfortunately, is what Len is most known for these days as it usually shows up on lists of most awkward hockey photos. Len only played 20 games for Vancouver their first year, and he was not considered an integral part of the team’s future, but at one time he was considered a decent prospect. In 1958-59, he scored 14 goals and 12 assists for Detroit, but he was never able to duplicate those totals the next few years. It wasn’t until 1962-63, while playing for Chicago, that he managed to score as many points (28 in fact), but by this point he had settled into playing third and fourth-line minutes. Overall, he would enjoy his best offensive season in 1973-74, scoring 26 goals and 22 assists for Edmonton of the WHA, and then he retired, but we’ll always have the memories of Len skating in the old Nuclear Hockey League.
